shark tooth Carcharocles angustidens - Oligocene (North Carolina)

Shark tooth:

Otodus (Carcharocles) angustidens

Oligocène, North Carolina, USA

Otodus (Carcharocles) angustidens is a megatoothed shark known from the Late Eocene to Miocene (34 to 21 million years ago). The largest individuals were about 11 to 12 meters long. This shark is related to another extinct megatoothed shark, the famous megalodon Otodus (Megaselachus) megalodon, long considered to belong to the genus Carcharodon, now represented by the great white shark Carcharodon carcharias, but these are two distinct lineages with quite similar triangular teeth (due to a comparable diet).
